This past summer, through a combination of donations and school system funds, the NCHS stadium field had extensive work completed to improve the long-term use of the field. In order to provide the best opportunity for the improvements to last, we need to allow the field to sit dormant for most of the coming spring.
It’s important to note that the stadium field is planted with Bermuda grass, which goes dormant and turns brown as temperatures consistently become cooler. It does not start regrowing until the temperatures consistently stay above a certain temperature in the spring. In this first year of resodding the field, it was strongly recommended that we give the sod time to reactivate throughout the spring and grow consistently before it is used. We will continue working with the contractor to monitor the health of the field and take the recommended steps to improve it for the long term.
As a result, lacrosse will be played on the back field this spring, which is the same area used for soccer. We’re working with a contractor to prepare the field to ensure it’s in great condition for play when the season begins. Also, we plan to host senior night for both lacrosse teams on the stadium field provided that there is no rain on the day of the games. We also plan to host graduation outdoors in the stadium as well. These events are typically after the temperatures have consistently warmed, therefore, not interfering with the growth.
We appreciate the understanding and support of athletes, coaches, families and the community as we continue working to maintain high-quality playing surfaces for all our athletes.
